A kitchen, bathroom and laundry – resolved to the last detail

This Glen Iris home came to us at the start of a significant renovation. The kitchen was being stripped back to bare structure, the bathroom hadn’t been touched in decades, and the laundry was doing double duty as a storage room. The bones of the home were strong, with generous ceiling heights, good northern light, and a kitchen that opens naturally onto the living and dining zones. Our job was to bring a design language to match.

The brief centred on a mid-century influence woven through classic, durable materials. Not a period recreation, but a home that feels considered and timeless, where dark walnut cabinetry sits beside Taj Mahal quartzite stone, where a powder room commands attention without trying too hard, and where the laundry finally earns its place as a properly designed room.

The Kitchen

The kitchen wraps around a central island and a full-height joinery wall housing the fridge, appliance garage, microwave, wine fridge, and double ovens. Every appliance is integrated or concealed. The result is a wall that reads as furniture rather than equipment. The island is squared off with a chunky stone waterfall edge in Silestone Taj Mahal quartzite look, with three pendant lights hanging from a vented bulkhead above.

Cabinetry throughout is a dark walnut laminate with green undertones, a material that sits warmly against the stone and gives the kitchen its mid-century character. Hardware is brushed nickel, tapware is brushed nickel, and a mosaic feature tile adds texture to the south wall. Every dimension has been documented and drawn to scale across eight kitchen elevations, ready for the builder to work from without interpretation.

The Powder Room

The powder room is the most personal space in the project. Floor-to-ceiling dark mosaic tile in a rich burgundy-brown wraps all four walls. A glass brick nib wall divides the toilet zone from the basin, framed in brushed chrome. The freestanding Nood Co. basin sits on a Rosso Levanto stone surround, a deep red marble with dramatic white veining that reads almost sculptural against the mosaic. Venetian plaster in the same tone as the travertine flooring softens the ceiling transition. It is a bold, committed room. Mid-century in its confidence, classical in its materials.

The Laundry

The laundry continues the material thread from the kitchen. Walnut laminate cabinetry with green-toned upper cabinets in a fluted glass finish, the same dark mosaic tile as a splashback, and a stacked washer and dryer tucked neatly to the left. A hanging rail, open shelving, and a full-height storage column make this a room that actually works. The window above the bench brings natural light in over the counter, something the previous laundry never had.
